Preparing to move IBM TM1 Perspectives data

Before moving your TM1 Perspectives data to IBM® Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel, you must analyze the size and type of workloads you have.

Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel is a hierarchy-aware, interactive ad hoc reporting tool. Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel is not designed to run large formula-based workloads, or to be used as a data export tool. Running large TM1® Perspectives workbooks in Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel might slow down the time it takes to refresh data. Instead of running large data exports in Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel, you can use TurboIntegrator processes. TurboIntegrator processes can generate large data extracts as CSVs, similar to TM1 Perspectives' workloads and view extract features. For more information on TurboIntegrator processes, see TurboIntegrator processes.

Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel uses different API endpoints than TM1 Perspectives. If you are using complex VBA scripts in your TM1 Perspectives workload, some of the API endpoints may not be supported in Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel. You will have to recreate the TM1 Perspectives APIs in Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel. For more information, see IBM Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel API.

Microsoft Excel macros support

TM1 Perspectives reports that include Excel macros, which use the TM1 native API to communicate with TM1, do not work in Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel. As outlined in the previous section, Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel uses a different API and macros from Perspectives reports do not have a conduit to the server. If similar capability is needed in Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel, you can update macros to communicate with TM1 through the TM1 REST API.

Action Buttons

Action Buttons defined in Perspectives require an upgrade for Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel operation. The upgrade can be made on a report-by-report basis or in a group. The groupings are based on the location of the files.

For more information, see Upgrade IBM TM1 Perspectives action buttons.
