Scheduling in reserve mode
Configuration of scheduling rule allows reservation of inventory if it is available but some of the order constraints cannot be met.
Usually, whenever the schedule runs and it cannot schedule an order for release, the quantity is backordered. An example is if an order is placed for 100 units and a fill quantity of 100. If 2 purchase orders for 50 units each are coming 5 days apart, the schedule first reserves 50 units against the first purchase order. Then, within 5 days, the entire line is scheduled once the complete inventory quantity becomes available. Thus, by reserving partially available inventory, the schedule ensures that line is scheduled once the second purchase order arrives. Otherwise, another order with less quantity could consume the first purchase order while the first order would be backordered.
