Defining a product item's units of measure

You can provide an item's weight and dimensions for shipping and storage purposes. You can also configure any alternate pricing and ordering units of measure an item may have.

About this task

To set up an item's measurements:

Procedure

  1. In the Item Details window, choose the Units Of Measure tab.
  2. Enter information in the applicable fields. Refer to Table 1 for field value descriptions.
Table 1. Units of measure tab
    Field Description
Weight Enter the item's numerical weight and select its unit of measure (for example, lbs.) from Weight UOM.
Length Enter the item's numerical length and select its unit of measure (for example, inches) from Length UOM.
Width Enter the item's numerical width and select its unit of measure (for example, inches) from Width UOM.
Height Enter the item's numerical height and select its unit of measure (for example, inches) from Height UOM.
    Pricing
Pricing UOM Is Different From Inventory UOM Select Pricing UOM Is Different From Inventory UOM, if this item uses a different unit of measure for pricing calculations than the unit of measure associated with the actual inventory product item. For example, you are creating a product item called Apples. Apples are inventoried and sold as a unit of measure called Cases. However, the pricing is determined by the weight of each case. In this scenario, you would assign the product item Apples the inventory unit of measure Cases and the pricing unit of measure type as Weight.
Pricing UOM If you selected Pricing UOM Is Different From Inventory UOM, select the unit of measure you want to use to price this item.
Default Pricing UOM Conversion Factor Enter the conversion rate from the inventory unit of measure to the pricing unit of measure. For example, a product item Apples has an inventory unit of measure of Case and a pricing unit of measure of Pounds. In this scenario, if Apples are inventoried and sold as 10 lb. cases, you would enter "10" as the conversion factor.
Alternate UOMs A list of alternate units of measure used by the item ID/unit of measure combination you are defining. For more information about alternate ordering units of measure, see Adding an alternate unit of measure to a product item.
    UOM The unit of measure.
Quantity The conversion rate from the inventory unit of measure to the alternate unit of measure.
Ordering UOM Indicates that the unit of measure can be used in the selling environment.
Note: Volume specified for cases or pallets in the Alternate UOM screen is considered for deciding whether over packing is required during the pack process. If the volume of the case or pallet is less than the volume defined in the Pack Strategy screen, the container gets over packed.
