Example: how exclusivity types apply

This example shows how Exclusivity Types apply.

In this example, different coupons are available from the manufacturer of a barbecue grill and from a large hardware retailer that sells it. The customer wants to purchase the barbecue grill and a grill brush. The Exclusivity IDs are "Manufacturer" and "Retailer," and the rule groups are item, order, and shipping. This example assumes that pricing is configured to identify and grant the highest discount to the customer, and priority is not assigned to the rules, even if multiple rules apply.
Table 1. Pricing rules for a $150.00 barbecue grill and $20.00 brush
Promotions from barbecue grill manufacturer
Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer
Promotions from seller that sells barbecue grill
Exclusivity ID = Retailer
$8.00 off grill (item group) $10.00 off grill (item group)
$12.00 off grill (item group) Free shipping (shipping this grill would usually cost $14.00) (shipping group)
$5.00 off grill brush (item group) 10% off an order (order group)
  5% off an order if you purchase with the store credit card (order group)
Table 2. How exclusivity types would apply promotions
Exclusivity type Which promotions apply Rationale
1. Pricing rule can combine with any other pricing rule
  1. $8.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer)
  2. $12.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer)
  3. $5.00 off grill brush (item group; Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer)
  4. $10.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
  5. Free shipping (shipping this grill would usually cost $14.00) (shipping group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
  6. 10% off an order (order group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
  7. 5% off an order if you purchase with the store credit card (order group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
With this Exclusivity Type, the customer can use all of the barbecue grill promotions, including the brush.
2. Pricing rule cannot combine with pricing rules of the same rule group for the same item
  1. $12.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer)
  2. $5.00 off grill brush (item group; Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer)
  3. $10.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
  4. Free shipping (shipping this grill would usually cost $14.00) (shipping group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
  5. 10% off an order (order group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
With this Exclusivity Type, a customer can use 5 item group coupons:
  1. The Manufacturer’s coupon for $12.00 off;
  2. The Manufacturer’s coupon for $5.00 off the grill brush, which is applicable because it is a different item from the grill;
  3. The Retailer’s $10.00 off an item coupon;
  4. The Retailer’s Free Shipping coupon;
  5. The Retailer’s coupon for 10% ($15.00) off the order, which is a better deal for the customer than 5% off the order for using the store credit card.
Note: In this Exclusivity Type and others, if priorities are defined, the resulting discounts might differ. For example, if Promotions from Barbecue Grill Manufacturer were...
Priority 1 – $12.00 off grill (item group)
Priority 2 – $8.00 off grill (item group)
...the higher Priority number (2) would take precedence and the $8.00 discount would be applied, not the $12.00 discount.
3. Pricing rule cannot combine with pricing rules of the same rule group for the same order
  1. $12.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer)
  2. $10.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
  3. Free shipping (shipping this grill would usually cost $14.00) (shipping group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
  4. 10% off an order (order group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
With this Exclusivity Type, a customer can use 4 order group coupons:
  1. The Manufacturer’s coupon for $12.00 off ;
  2. The Retailer’s $10.00 off an item;
  3. The Retailer’s Free Shipping;
  4. The Retailer’s 10% ($15.00) off the order, which is better for the customer than 5% off the order for using the store credit card.
Note: The grill brush coupon is not applicable because it is in the same rule group (item) with the same Exclusivity ID (Manufacturer) as the $12.00 off coupon (1) for this order. The $12.00 off coupon is the better deal.
4. Pricing rule cannot combine with any other pricing rule
  1. $12.00 off grill (item group; Exclusivity ID = Manufacturer)
  2. 10% off an order (order group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer)
With this Exclusivity Type, a customer can use 2 coupons, one from Exclusivity ID "Manufacturer" and one from Exclusivity ID "Retailer":
  1. The Manufacturer’s coupon for $12.00 off;
  2. The Retailer’s coupon for 10% ($15.00) off the order.
5. Pricing rule cannot combine with any other pricing rule - Global 10% off an order (order group; Exclusivity ID = Retailer) With this Exclusivity Type, the customer can use only 1 of the coupons: the vendor’s coupon for 10% ($15.00) is the best discount for the customer.
