Creating and editing IBM MQ alerts

As a Systems Integrator, you can set up IBM® MQ alerts to monitor queues across your production environment only. You can create a maximum of 20 alerts. Then, depending on the metrics that you want to monitor, you can adjust the alert threshold.

Before you begin

Become familiar with the different types of alert that you can create or update. For more information, see IBM MQ alerts.

About this task

In addition to creating and editing alerts, you can also merge alerts. To minimize the number of alerts that you manage, similar alerts that you create are merged into one alert, and you are notified of the merged alert. Alerts might be merged when you create alerts or update existing alerts.

Procedure

  1. To access any of your environments, click the menu icon that is next to IBM Sterling Order Management - Self Service. Click the Self Service menu and then click Environments.
  2. To open the Alerts configuration page to view the alerts on an environment or to create a new alert, click Alerts configuration. The Alerts configuration page lists all the alerts that are available including the following alert details:
    Name
    The name of the alert.
    Alert type
The type of alerts, for example, IBM MQ Queue message or IBM MQ Queue depth.
    Threshold
The threshold that must be reached before an alert runs.
    Time threshold
The threshold that is set in time before an alert runs.
    Resource
The resource on which the alert is created, such as the queue names for each resource.
    State
The state of the alert, including enabled and disabled.
To view the most recent list of alerts, click the Refresh icon.
  3. You can search for an alert that is created already. In the Search bar, enter the alert name, metric, or notification email that is associated with the alert.
  4. To change the state of alerts, complete one of the following steps:
    • To change the state of multiple alerts, select the alert checkbox next to the Name column.
    • To change the state of one alert, select the checkbox next to the alert, and select an appropriate action.

When you duplicate an alert, you save a lot of time. All the information is populated for you, so you can update it quickly.

  5. To edit an alert, click the Name of the alert. In the Edit alert dialog, complete your updates, and click Update.
If the edited alert is similar to an existing one, the resources are merged into the existing alert.
  6. To create a new alert, click Create alert. In the Create alert dialog, select one of the alert type from the list. Depending on the type of alert, the threshold conditions that are available vary.
  7. Enter the name and a description of the alert.
  8. Depending on the type of alert, set the threshold conditions for the alert to violate.
    • To create a threshold condition for the IBM MQ Current queue depth alert, complete the following steps:
      1. From the Aggregation list, select the type of aggregation: Average or Maximum.
      2. From the Threshold operator list, select the >, >=, <or <= operator.
      3. From the Threshold value list, select a threshold value to evaluate against an alert.
    • To create a threshold condition for the IBM MQ full percentage alert, complete the following steps:
      1. In the Aggregation list, the Average aggregation is selected by default.
      2. From the Threshold operator list, select the > or >= operator.
      3. Use the Threshold value slider to select a threshold percentage to evaluate against an alert.
    • To create a threshold condition for the IBM MQ messages out or messages in alert, complete the following steps:
      1. In the Aggregation list, the Sum aggregation is selected by default.
      2. From the Threshold operator list, select the < or <= operator.
      3. From the Threshold value list, select a threshold value to evaluate against an alert.
  9. Create a time threshold for when you want to be alerted.
    1. To specify the time threshold over which the threshold is evaluated, select an appropriate option from the list.
    2. To determine the number of times a violation must occur before you are alerted, in Consecutive violations, select an appropriate option from the list.
  10. To specify the queues to monitor, select the appropriate queue name from the list.
Only the queues that are in a successful state in your local environment are displayed here.
  11. To specify the email notifications, enter the email addresses in a comma-separated format to receive the alert updates.
Note: It can be any email address or a distribution list. The email addresses need not be the ones that are configured in Self Service.
  12. Optional: To create a custom text label that is added to the alert notification, enter the custom notification label.
  13. Click Create.
