SMF status

Select U from the Control Options panel to get the OMEGAMON for CICS (3270) SMF Status panel or enter the O.U fast path command from any panel to see the status of SMF buffers that are used in this release.

As the buffers are filled, they are written to SMF. Each SMF buffer can contain database data for multiple transactions.

The SMF command displays these components:
  • CICSMON
  • OMEXITS
  • SMFDATA
  • COMPRESS

CICSMON indicates whether CICS® performance monitoring is active (YES) or not.

SMFDATA indicates whether CICS performance monitoring is written to SMF (YES) or suppressed.

OMEXITS indicates whether OMEGAMON for CICS (3270) has been initialized (YES) or not.

COMPRESS indicates whether the file and database SMF records are compressed prior to them being written to SMF (YES) or written to SMF without being compressed.

You can overtype these settings in the YES | NO field with ON or OFF to change them.

The Buffer Status column of this panel can have these values:
Not Alloc
The buffer has not yet been allocated by OMEGAMON for CICS (3270).
Avaibl
The buffer is available for use.
Written
The buffer has been written successfully to SMF.
In use
The buffer is active and receiving data.
Unknown
The state of the buffer can not be determined.
Write SMF
The buffer is pending a write to SMF.
Fail (xx)
The write to SMF failed, where xx is the decimal return code from the SMFEWTM macro. These are the common return codes:
  • 16 - SMF is not active.
  • 20 - SMF suppressed the record.
  • 36 - The record type (112) is suppressed.
  • 40 - A buffer shortage caused the data to be lost. SMF data sets that are full might cause this return code.

The OMEGAMON for CICS (3270) SMF record number is no longer user selectable. In this version the database records are written as SMF112 records.

OMEGAMON for CICS (3270) SMF Status panel also includes information about the number of tasks records that have been written to the buffer. The lengths of the longest and shortest records and their average can also been seen. The compression ratio for the file is also displayed.
