Activating OMEGAMON for IMS predefined situations

Predefined situations that ship with OMEGAMON® for IMS on z/OS® do not start automatically. You must activate the situations before monitoring can begin. To activate a situation, you use the Tivoli® Enterprise Portal Situation editor to distribute, that is, to assign the situation to one or more managed systems or managed system lists. Then, you start the situation.

Before you begin

Before you activate the predefined situations, examine the situations and set customized values that are meaningful for your installation. See Modifying OMEGAMON for IMS predefined situations.

Procedure

Distributing situations

  1. Open the Situation Editor from the toolbar or by right-clicking an item in the Navigator and selecting Situations from the menu.
If you open the Situation editor by right-clicking a Navigator item, the situation that you create is automatically associated with that item. If you open the editor from the toolbar, you must manually associate the new situation with a Navigator item to see an alert indicator when the situation evaluates as true.
  2. If necessary, use the Situation Filter to view the situations that are available for distribution. Determine which situations you plan to use.
    1. Check Eligible for Association to see a list of all the situations that are written for this type of managed system, that is, the z/OS IMSplex or z/OS System, depending on where you access the Situation editor. If you access the editor from the toolbar, you see situations for all types of managed systems.
Any undistributed situations display an icon, partially dimmed.
  3. Select the situation that you want to distribute.
The Situation editor displays the Condition tab for the situation.
  4. Select the Distribution tab.
The available managed systems and managed systems lists are displayed.
  5. Add distribution lists for only those situations that you plan to auto-start or plan to manually enable. Select the systems and lists to which you want to distribute the situation, and then click the arrow to assign the situations to the systems or system lists.
If you distribute all the situations, all situations are propagated to the agents when the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server starts. Distributing all situations can simplify any subsequent activation procedures, but it also extends startup time.
  6. Click Apply to save and implement the change and continue editing; click OK to apply and save the change and close the Situation editor.
After you distribute a situation, you can see the name of the situation that is listed under the name of its associated item in the Situation editor.

Starting situations

  1. To run situations for a limited time or only under specific conditions, start and stop these situations manually. Right-click on the situation name in the Situation editor tree and select Start from the menu.
You might want to start situations manually to evaluate the impact of the monitoring and monitoring interval on system performance and adjust values accordingly.
  2. To run situations indefinitely across Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server restarts, set the situations to start automatically when the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server starts:
    1. Select the name of the situation in the Situation editor tree.
    2. On the Conditions tab, check Run at startup.
    3. Click Apply to save and implement the change and continue editing; click OK to apply and save the change and close the Situation editor.
