Example of a use case

This section describes an example of a use case that explains how Buffer Pool Analyzer tools can be used.

The example supports the generalized approach given in Buffer pool analysis and tuning processes. It is assumed that you already have a reasonable understanding of host-based activity reports (described in Interpreting activity reports) and the use of the object placement and simulation functions (described in and Simulating buffer pool behavior). The example is applicable for Buffer Pool Analyzer for z/OS®, respectively the Buffer Pool Analysis function of Db2 Performance Expert for z/OS.

The example shows:
  1. How summary reports are used to quickly identify major buffer pool performance characteristics.
  2. How detail reports are used to identify the most active and most expensive objects (in terms of synchronous operations).
  3. How object placement and simulation are used to analyze the effects of different buffer pool attributes.
