Rolling upgrade to a newer version

Follow these tasks to upgrade your Operational Decision Manager to a recent version.

These tasks are for Operational Decision Manager 8.11.0 or a newer version. No rolling upgrade to 9.6.0 is supported from versions earlier than 8.11.0. To do so, you must shut down your system during the upgrade. For more information, see Migration scenarios.

When you upgrade from 8.11.0 or a newer version to 9.6.0 or later, in-place upgrade of the Rule Execution Server and Decision Warehouse databases is not necessary because the schemas of these databases are compatible between the versions.

The rolling upgrade does not include the testing and simulation features. You must stop using these features before the rolling upgrade begins, and you cannot use them during the rolling upgrade to prevent two versions of Decision Runner from existing on the same node. You must deploy the testing and simulation archive after the rolling upgrade.

Operational Decision Manager 9.6.0 uses Java™ 21.

The rolling upgrade does not work when the Decision Center and Rule Execution Server are installed in the same server instance or node.

In the rolling upgrade procedure, Rule Execution Server is upgraded first. You must launch the server with JDK 21, while the Decision Center is still in vN-n (8.11.0, 8.12.0 or 9.0.0) and requires older JDK versions:
  • 8.11.0: JDK 8
  • 8.12.0: JDK 11
  • 9.0.0: JDK 17
If Decision Center and Rule Execution Server are not installed in separate server instances or nodes, both should be upgraded at the same time.
