Configuring the core components to run as non-root

Complete the following configuration steps in order to run the core components as a non-root user.

1. Log in as the root user.
2. Run only one of the following scripts from the $NCHOME/precision/scripts/ directory:
   • Run setup_run_as_setuid_root.sh.
   • Run setup_run_as_capabilities.sh on Linux platforms only, if you can not run binary files with a UID of root for security reasons.
3. Run the NCHOME/precision/scripts/setup_run_as_setuid_root.sh script.
4. Optional: If you are running the mttrapd probe (also known as the SNMP probe) on the same server as Network Manager, perform additional configuration to enable the probe to run with root privileges:
   • Configure the probe to run as a non-root user using the instructions in the topic Running probes as SUID root, within the Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus product information at http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSSHTQ/landingpage/NetcoolOMNIbus.html.

     Important: Note that because these instructions involve copying Sybase libraries to the /usr/lib directory, this might impact the operation of any installation of Sybase that is on the same server as the mttrapd probe.
