Standard EMS discovery data flow

Use this information to understand how Network Manager collects topology data from an EMS as part of a discovery or partial discovery.

The table below shows the steps involved in collecting topology data from EMS as part of a discovery or partial discovery. After this data has been collected, Network Manager stitches it together with the topology.

Table 1. Collecting topology data from EMS during discovery
Step Data Flow
1 Using the Collector finder, the discovery system queries the collector to obtain a list of devices managed by the EMS. In the case of a partial discovery, the discovery might query for a single device or subnet only.
2 The Collector queries the EMS for the list of devices.
3 The EMS responds with list of managed devices.
4 The Collector responds by providing the list of devices.
5 Using a number of specialized collector discovery agents at different times during the discovery, the discovery system queries the collector for basic and detailed information about each of the devices in the list. Detailed information requested includes the following:
  • Inventory information.
  • Layer 1 and microwave connection details.
  • Layer 2 connection details.
  • Layer 3 connection details.
  • LTE information.
  • Radio access network (RAN) information.
  • VPN information.
6 The Collector responds by providing basic and detailed information as this is requested.
