Preserving custom OS settings during upgrade

Deployment options: Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System

If you want to preserve custom OS configuration files or directories, you can add a file or directory location inside the ipshost container in /nz/containerupgrade/files_to_backup.conf. The items that are listed in this conf file are backed up and then restored after the upgrade process.

Warning: Adding file location inside the ipshost container before the upgrade rewrites IBM-shipped OS custom files after the upgrade.
  • For 11.0.4.1, if LDAP is configured, preserve your LDAP configuration by adding /etc/sssd/sssd.conf and /etc/pam.d/netezza_nps to /nz/containerupgrade/files_to_backup.conf.
  • For 11.0.5.0 and later, your LDAP configuration is already preserved. You do not have to preserve it manually. The list of the preserved configuration files is available here.
Note: If you set up events as described in Set up events, make sure you add /etc/postfix/main.cf to /nz/containerupgrade/files_to_backup.conf before you start the upgrade procedure.
  • If you need to preserve /etc/sudoers, you can:
    1. Create a custom file under /etc/sudoers.d/ and update it with your custom entries. For example,: /etc/suoders.d/custom_sudoers.
    2. Update /nz/containerupgrade/files_to_backup.conf by adding /etc/suoders.d/custom_sudoers in the backup list.
Now, custom_sudoers is preserved across upgrades.
You cannot back up the following configuration files:
  • /etc/resolv.conf
  • /etc/hostname
  • /etc/hosts
