Installing third-party software

Deployment options: Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System

Learn how to install third-party software depending on your Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System version.

Restrictions and guidance

Restriction: Netezza Performance Server does not provide support for third-party products. You are advised not to install third-party tools on the Netezza Performance Server host as they might affect system performance. Instead, run your operations from an external server.

If you decide to install third-party software on Netezza Performance Server, make sure you first install the tools on a nonproduction system to observe the overall system behavior.

If you require third-party solutions on Netezza Performance Server, note that the third-party applications cannot do the following on Netezza Performance Server:

Cannot update the kernel.
Make sure that no changes were done to the kernel after you installed your third-party tools.
Cannot update or change settings that are used by Netezza Performance Server.
Cannot do any operations under /nz or its subfolders.
Cannot install anything in the /nz mount point.
Cannot modify any system configuration or libraries.
Cannot use excessive resources.
Excessive usage of resources might compromise Netezza Performance Server, including its CPU, memory, and storage.

Installing inside the Netezza Performance Server container

If you must, you can install third-party software inside the Netezza Performance Server container if you are on Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.8 or later or Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.7 or earlier.

If you install third-party software inside the container, consider the following points.

After you install third-party software, you must redeploy the container to all the control plane and, if applicable, connector nodes. If you do not redeploy the container, your software is not available if the host fails over to another nodes. For more information about copying your modified host images to other nodes, see Redeploying the container for 11.0.7.0 or later.
You must install your third-party software each time you upgrade Netezza Performance Server and restore or configure any configuration files that are needed by the third-party tool.

Installing on the bare metal, outside the Netezza Performance Server container

Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.8 or later: If you are on Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.8 or later, you are strongly discouraged from installing third-party software on bare metal. If you must, you can install third-party tools at your own risk. Any issues that might arise from the installation are not supported by IBM.
Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.7 or earlier: If you are on Netezza Performance Server for Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.7 or earlier, you can install third-party software only if it is provided as an add-on to Cloud Pak for Data. Installing any software on bare metal servers, or on the virtual machines in the system is not supported.
