Setting the appearance and behavior of the Event Viewer

You can configure the appearance and behavior of the Event Viewer to customize style, layout, or localization. The workspace preferences outlined in this topic are general user preferences which can apply to any Event Viewer. Some preference settings might have been disabled (in widget preferences by the administrator) for the individual instance of Event Viewer that you have open. In such a case, a preference can still be edited but it will be shown grayed out to indicate that it will not take effect for this Event Viewer.

Before you begin

If preferences have been used to hide the toolbar or the preferences button itself, you can open the preferences window via the menu bar. If the menu bar is also hidden, you can execute the SHIFT-P keyboard shortcut to display the preferences window.
  • All user preferences set in Console Settings > User Preferences for Netcool/OMNIbus Web GUI > Event List Configuration are applied to the Event Viewer, with the exception of Refresh rate (which is configured via the Event Viewer portlet preferences).
  • Preferences set in the AEL for Row Coloring and Changing how event severity is depicted are adopted by the Event Viewer, until such time as workspace preferences are customized in the Event Viewer.
  • Changes made to Date/Time Format and Time Zone preferences in the Event Viewer are also applied to the AEL, and vice versa.
  • Changes made to font name, size, or row padding will also take effect in the event properties window, the next time one is opened from the Event Viewer.
  • The toolbar will not be shown if there are no items to show on it, regardless of whether Show Toolbar is ticked or not.

Procedure

  1. On the toolbar, click Preferences button Workspace Preferences. The workspace preferences are divided into Style, Layout, Data, and Notification tabs.
    Style
Configure font and row style preferences. Custom font names, font sizes, and row padding values can be typed into the available fields or selected from the drop-down list of default values. You can show event severity as icons or as text, or as a combination of icons and text.
    • Font Name
      • If an invalid font name is entered, or the font does not exist on the operating system, the next available font from the normal theme will be applied.
    • Font Size
    • Row Padding
    • Row Coloring

4 Column Locking
      • If enabled, columns defined as locked in the current view will always be displayed when scrolling horizontally.
    • Icon Display
      • Show icons only
      • Show icons and text
      • Show text only
Configure the Filter drop-down and View drop-down to display longer names.
    • You can specify custom width values, in pixels, for both drop-downs. Enable custom widths by ticking the Custom widths check-box within the Workspace Preferences dialog. Then, enter a width value for each drop-down, the value must be between 180 and the maximum value (the default maximum value is 500). If you enter a value that exceeds the maximum value that is configured, an error message displays.
    • A maximum value for the Custom widths drop-down can be configured by the Administrator. To configure a maximum value, the Administrator goes to the WEBGUI_HOME/etc/system/userdefaults.props file and configures the property value for the following two properties.
      • event_viewer_eventlist_filter_dropdown_width_max
      • event_viewer_eventlist_view_dropdown_width_max
    Layout
    Configure workspace layout preferences.
    • Show Toolbar
      • Refresh
      • Freeze
      • Filters and Views
      • Event Summary
      • Preferences
      • Quick Filter
    • Show Menu
    • Show Status Bar
    Data
    Configure workspace localization preferences.
    • Select a Date/Time format from the drop-down list. The Sample field shows how each format is displayed in the Event Viewer:
      • Short M/d/yy, hh:mm a = 7/10/15, 11:14 AM
      • Medium MMM d, yyyy, hh:mm:ss a = Jul 10, 2015, 11:14:39 AM
      • Long MMMM d, yyyy 'at' hh:mm:ss a v = July 10, 2015 at 11:15:40 AM GMT
      • Full EEEE MMMM d, yyyy 'at' hh:mm:ss a v = Friday, July 10, 2015 at 11:16:45 AM GMT
      • Custom - select the custom option to tailor the Date/Time format in the Pattern field. For example, you can customize the sequence of the date, year, and time. See Permitted date and time formats for more information about syntax and symbols.

The format is predefined for all Date/Time formats, except Custom. The format depends on the browser setting for its locale, where the Date/Time format for that locale is used.

If English (United States) is used, the Short form for Date/Time format is displayed as M/dd/yy h:mm a, for example: 12/11/00 2:15 AM. After changing the language from English (United States) to English (United Kingdom) with the Settings > Time & Language on Windows operating systems, the Date/Time format also changes to dd/MM/y HH:mm, for example: 10/08/2020 14:07, with a 24 hour clock.

    • Select the operatorTimezone from the drop-down list.
    Configure Event Table preferences.
    • In the Events per request field, enter the number of event rows to return per request. After you configure this preference, you have a wider area in the Event Viewer to scroll through the Event Viewer data with ease. Without this configuration, when you scroll in the Event Viewer you can encounter disruptive scrolling due to regular load REST requests.
    • A maximum value for the Events per request field might be configured by the Administrator. To configure a maximum value for this field, the Administrator goes to the WEBGUI_HOME/etc/system/userdefaults.props file and configures the property value for event_viewer_events_loaded_max:. In the Events per request field, if you enter a value that exceeds the maximum value that is configured by the Administrator, then an error message is displayed.
    • Select a refresh time in the Event Viewer. Enter a value (seconds) for the Refresh time in standalone mode field.

4 Notifications
Enable notifications for alerts in the event list.
    • You must select Enable Notifications in addition to your preferred notification method.
    • Enable flashing in the Event Viewer for alerts where the Flash field in the alerts.status table has been set to 1.
    • Enable pop-up messages:
      • On New Events: enable pop-up messages for newly inserted events in the event list.
      • On Modified Events: enable pop-up messages for existing events being modified in the event list.
      • On Deleted Events: enable pop-up messages for events being deleted in the event list.
    • Enable sound alerts:
      • On New Events: enable sound notifications for newly inserted events in the event list.
      • On Modified Events: enable sound notifications for existing events being modified in the event list.
      • On Deleted Events: enable sound notifications for events being deleted in the event list.
      • Enable custom sound alerts for maximum severity notification of event list changes:
        • Severity Level Sounds: enable customized severity-level sound notifications for changes in the event list.

Depending on your selections for sound notification types, on refresh, you are alerted with a custom sound notification specific to the maximum event severity associated with that particular event list change. For a custom sound notification to be played when an event is new, modified, or deleted, you must have enabled the relevant type of sound notification and you must have specified a sound file for the relevant status severity.

        Note:

The Sound drop-down list and the drop-down lists associated with the Severity Level Sounds are populated with any files of type .mp3, .wav, or .ogg which exist in JazzSM_WAS_Profile/profile/installedApps/JazzSMNode01Cell/isc.ear/OMNIbusWebGUI.war/sounds. New files that are added will be presented to the operator in the drop down list after the next restart of the Dashboard Application Services Hub.

Only file types which are supported on the operator's browser will be listed. The recommended file type is mp3, as these are supported on all browsers.

  2. Click Apply to apply your changes to the current Event Viewer instance. Click Apply & Save to apply changes to the current instance and save the changes for all future instances.
