Selection tools
You use the selection tools to select and highlight features on the map. The features are then displayed in the Results window.
You can select features at a specific point on the map, by drawing an extent area, and by drawing a polygon. The features that are displayed depend on the layers that you are viewing on the map.
When you use the selection tools, the Selection tools window opens. In this window, you can choose the specific tool that you want to use: Select by Point and Select by Polygon. When you use the Selection tools to select features on the map, the results are added to the Results window.
| Name of the tool | Location | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Selection Tools | Map toolbar | Opens the Selection Tools window. This window contains the different selection tools. |
| Select by Point | Selection Tools window | Selects the features at the point you clicked the map and returns all of the other features that they intersect with to the results dialog. Selects a point on the map and displays all the features on the map at that point. |
| Select by Polygon | Selection Tools window | Draws a polygon on the map that displays all features in the polygon. |
Layer selection
When you select features with the selection tools, the features that are displayed depend on the layers that you are viewing. You can add or remove layers so that you can control the features that are displayed on the map. In the Selection tools window, when you click Layer Selection, the window is expanded and displays a tree structure with all the available layers. You can select just the layers that you want, you can select all layers, and you can clear all the layers. The features that are displayed when you use the selection tools can increase significantly if you select many layers.
