Public maps

To supplement your existing map data, you can use public maps from ArcGIS and OpenStreetMap as base maps. By combining your existing map data with these map services, you can use any available map, such as detailed aerial and street data to view map features.

When you use ArcGIS maps, you must ensure that your local map services match the coordinate system that is used by the public map selected. When you use OpenStreetMap with your existing data, you must configure each map service with the following coordinate system information.
Coordinate system information User input
Coordinate system name WGS_1984_Web_Mercator_Auxiliary_Sphere
Well-known ID (WKID) 3857
Authority EPSG
Spatial reference 102100 (3857)

To use ArcGIS maps, you need the map service REST URL and add it in the services table like any other Esri map service REST URL.

To use OpenStreetMap, select the Activate OpenStreetMap checkbox.

You can also specify the initial and full extent of the map. The initial extent and full extent values for OpenStreetMap are measured in units of meters. The meter unit measurement is defined by the coordinate system. If properties are needed, you can use the data frame properties in ArcMap to determine the coordinate values for the initial and full extent.

You can also use OpenStreetMap without any existing map data. However, if you use only OpenStreetMap, you can automatically locate only records that have X and Y coordinates.

An internet connection is needed to access OpenStreetMap.
