Map extents

A map extent is the limit of a physical area that is represented on the Map tab or in map windows.

When you use the map in spatially enabled applications, the area of the map that is displayed is called a map extent. Every time that you change the map that is displayed, for example, by zooming, or by panning, a new map extent is created.

Map extents are created in the following ways:
  • Zooming in or out
  • Panning
  • Using the Results window to select a feature on the map
  • Using the Geocoder tool to find an address or coordinates

When you open a map, it is centralized based on the relationship status of the record. If a feature on the map is not linked to the record, the map is centralized by using map tool persistence information or initial extent information that is defined for the map. Alternately, the map is centralized by using the extent that is defined for the ArcGIS server basemap. If a feature on the map is linked to the record, the map is centralized by using the current scale, the scale that is defined in the effectiveMinScale property. Alternately, the map is centralized by using the scale that is calculated by using the average of the maxScale and minScale values.
