Maintaining operator logs

You can create and maintain shift logs. Shift log records contain details about shift changeovers, equipment changes, production losses, and near misses that might occur during a shift.

You use the Operator Log application to do the following activities:
  • Record individual log entries and details about shift teams.
  • Record the details of operator rounds.
  • Use templates to quickly populate shift log records with frequently used data.
  • Identify the assets and locations that are associated with a log entry.
  • Record an asset or location at the header level of a shift log.
  • Record the production parameters that are based on the classification of production activities.
  • Review work and planned work on a work asset that might be related to a shift log record.
  • Record manual meter readings.
  • Review the details for permit to work records to include the ancestor or the child locations that apply to a permit.
  • To record loss information, you can create production loss records when you create log entries.
  • Review the details for risk assessment records that specify locations, and the details for risk assessment records that are specified on location records. When you review the risk assessment details, you can specify whether you want the review to include the details for child locations and for ancestor locations.
  • At the log entry level, from the Location or the Asset field, you can review the details for Bypass Management records that are associated with a log entry.
  • Review the history of an operator log, such as the details on status changes.
  • Use the Log Book application along with the Operator Log application to collate shift log entries into one log book.
  • Enable shift log handovers from one shift team to the next shift team. Shift log handovers can be critically important in maintaining the safety of an enterprise.
  • To automate repetitive business and record management processes, you can use the Workflow application to plan, design, build, test, implement, and manage workflow processes.
  • Starting in 9.2, assign inspections to specific individuals or groups to reduce unnecessary downloads of unassigned inspections to mobile devices. New fields in the inspection results identify the assigned owner and owner group for each inspection. The application uses this information to route inspections to the appropriate person. For more information, see Assigning inspections.

Important: This feature is available only in the feature channel. For more information, see What's new in the feature channel for.
Additionally, you can create the following records from an operator log:
  • Bypass Management
  • Communication
  • Defect
  • Incident
  • Investigation
  • MOC - MOC records can be created only from within log entries (Log Entry field) of shift logs
  • MOC Request - MOC Request records can be created only from within log entries (Log Entry field) of shift logs
  • Service Request
  • Work Order

Except for a communication record, the records that are generated form a related record relationship between the operator log and the created records. The records become follow-up records of the operator log.

Many of the Operator Log features are enabled by using the signature options in the Security Groups application. To review all of the features that are enabled through signature options for this application, access the Security Groups application. From the Security Groups application, create or modify a security group and save the record. Filter for the Operator Log application, then review the options that are available. You must have administrator privileges to enable the signature options.
