Creating isolation certificates
An isolation certificate defines the hazards and isolation procedures that are associated with work activities. When you create isolation certificates, you provide the details and actions with which the isolation work is associated. You ensure that isolation certificates are ready to be approved. You can hold toolbox talks to communicate the safety aspects of the work activities.
About this task
When you create an isolation certificate, you must evaluate the hazards that are involved in completing the work that is associated with that isolation certificate. You can also define the lock out or tag out plans, and the conditions for work.
Assets or locations are isolated to allow work to be carried out without endangering personnel. Procedures are followed to contain an asset or a location before an authorized person can work on it. For example, you can specify that an asset is isolated from a potentially hazardous source of energy. When the work is complete, the steps that were taken to isolate that asset are removed so that the asset can be returned to production.
Procedure
- Optional:
In the Permit and Certificate Types application, define a permit or certificate type to
associate with the isolation certificate.
Use the rich text editor of the Long Description field to assign a color and a font size to the text. You can assign a different color to highlight the type of permit or certificate. The highlighted text displays in the Isolation Certificate Header field of the isolation certificate record.
- In the People application, authorize qualified, active personnel as isolation specialists. You can also authorize personnel to specific areas of the plant. Select the authorized area authority or the authorized isolation authority, in case countersignatures are essential for the isolation certificate.
- In the Risk Assessment application, identify the hazards that are associated with work operations and assess the risks. Hazard records must belong to the same organization as the isolation certificate.
- In the Isolation Management application, click New Isolation Certificate.
- On the Isolation Certificate tab, specify the details for the isolation certificate.
- On the Hazards tab, specify the risk assessment, the hazard review, the gas testing details, and the conditions for work.
- On the Isolations tab, specify the lock out and tag out plan operations that are essential to implement the isolation of the location or the asset.
- Save the record.
