Position codes

A position code is a code that identifies the position of a item, a component, or an assembly on a vehicle. You associate position codes with component codes to identify the position of a component on an asset.

You can associate position codes with component codes in the Component Codes (Tr) application. For example, front brake shoes might have a component code of 013-001-013, and position codes of traffic side axle 1 (TSA1) and curb side axle 1 (CSA1).

A position code can be referenced as the parent of another position code and by other records, such as work orders, purchase orders, and job plans. You can delete a position code only if it is not referenced by an active record.

Position code hierarchies

You can organize position codes into hierarchies to reflect the positions of various components in an assembly. To create hierarchies, you specify parent and child position codes. If you create hierarchies, it is helpful to use a lettering or numbering scheme for position codes. Use a numbering scheme that reflects the hierarchical organization.

Example of a numbering scheme for a position code hierarchy

Numbering scheme Position code examples
Name top-level position codes with two-letter identifiers CS = curb side, TS = traffic side.
Name child position codes with three-letter identifiers CSA = curb side axle, TSA = traffic side axle.
Name grandchild position codes with four-character identifiers CSA1 = curb side axle 1, CSA2 = curb side axle 2, TSA1 = traffic side axle 1, TSA2 = traffic side axle 2.
Name great-grandchild position codes with five-character identifiers CSA2O = curb side axle 2 outer, CSA2I = curb side axle 2 inner.

Position code hierarchy view

To view position code hierarchies, click Open Drilldown in the Position Codes (Tr) application or on the Detail menu of a Position Code or Belongs To field. In the Position Codes Drilldown window, you can go to the hierarchy and select a position code for the field.
