Meters

You use the Meters application to add or to modify meter definitions. Meter definitions include names for the meters as well as sets of attributes that describe the meters. Meters are used to track asset or location performance. An asset or a location can have multiple meters associated with it.

Meters track the condition and usage of assets and locations. You can use meters to collect data about an asset performance. This data can then be used to initiate maintenance activities or to monitor the asset for potential problems. In Maximo® Application Suite, meters are of three types:
  • Continuous: This type of meters track values that might increase with time, for example, mileage or running hours. These meters are typically used to trigger preventive maintenance activities based on their usage. Some examples of continuous meters are vehicle odometers or runtime meters on engines.
  • Gauge: This type of meters records fluctuating numeric measurements like pressure, temperature, or vibration. They are used for condition monitoring, to set action and warning limits for triggering work orders.
  • Characteristic: This type of meters record qualitative data or observations, like oil color or asset cleanliness. It is possible to define a list of acceptable values for characteristic meters.

Meters are usually found inside or outside buildings.

While there may be instances where the same meter is used more than once on the same asset or location, meters in the following applications reflect logical meters:

  • Meter Groups
  • Assets
  • Locations
  • Preventive Maintenance
  • Job Plans
  • Items
  • Condition Monitoring

Meters in these applications are used to track meter readings, not physical meters.
