Software license allocation when swapping assets
When you replace one asset with another one using the Swap Assets option in the Assets application, you can transfer software license allocations from the original asset to the replacing asset or remove a license from the original asset.
In the Swap Assets window, when you select an asset in the Assets table, the Manage Software License Allocations table lists licenses that are allocated to the asset selected. If you have authorization to transfer software license allocations, you can select a license in this table and transfer it when the asset swap occurs. You can also remove the license allocation from the original asset instead of transferring it.
Select Transfer to transfer the license allocation from the original asset to the replacing asset. The replacing asset receives the license capacity that was allocated to the original asset.
Select Remove to remove the license allocation from the original asset. Removing the license allocation from the asset increases the capacity available for the license. You can then use the additional capacity if you need it for other assets.
Because in most cases, licenses are transferred from the original asset to the replacing asset, by default the Transfer checkbox is selected, and the Remove checkbox is cleared. However, if the original asset and the replacing asset have the same license allocation, no transfer is needed. Consequently, the Transfer checkbox is cleared, and the Remove checkbox is selected so that you can remove the license from the original asset.
If Transfer and Remove are both cleared, the license allocation does not change.
If, for any reason, the asset swap fails, no license allocations are changed.
You can transfer or remove licenses for asset swaps only if your system administrator has granted you permission to perform the tasks. Administrators grant authorization for this task in the Security Groups application.
