Go To Configuration Items

About this task

Select Go To Configuration Items to launch to the Configuration Items application, where you can locate a CI with which to populate the Configuration Item field. You can view and navigate a CI topology to help you find the CI that you want. After you locate a CI, you can return to the current application with the CI value, which is displayed in the Configuration Item field.

To go to the Configuration Items application and select a CI:

Procedure

  1. Click the Detail Menu icon next to the Configuration Item field in the Incidents application.

The Configuration Items application opens. If a CI is already specified for the record, that CI name is displayed in the Configuration Item Name field. If no CI is specified, you can enter search parameters to search for a CI. For example, you can enter the host name for an application server that needs to be patched, and then find the application server CI with which to populate the Configuration Item Name field.

  2. To view a CI topology in which to search for a CI, do the following:
    1. With a CI displayed in the Configuration Item Name field, open the CI Topology tab.

A topology graph is displayed, focusing on the selected CI and its related CIs. A double-line border indicates the selected CI. The topology business view is displayed, ensuring that the CIs in the view are critical to the business and have an impact when taken out of service. You can filter the view by CI classification, view specified types of CI relationships, and more. For complete information about the topology view, see Navigating the CI topology.

    2. If you want to view the topology for a related CI in the graph, right-click the related CI and select Move to. This refocuses the topology on that CI, and you can see the CIs that are related to it. You can Move to any CI that is visible in the graph, using this feature to move among CIs and zero in on the CI that you want to associate with the work order.
    3. To select a CI in the topology, ensure that the topology is focused on that CI, and click Return With Value. You return to the original application, and the Configuration Item field is populated with the CI that you selected in the topology.
  3. To exit the Configuration Items application at any time, do one of the following:
    • With a CI specified in the Configuration Item Name field, click Return With Value. You return to the application that you were using, and the Configuration Item field is populated with the CI that you selected.
    • With the topology view focused on the CI that you want to select for the record, click Return With Value. You return to the application that you were using, and the Configuration Item field is populated with the CI that you selected.
    • To return without specifying a CI, click Return. The Configuration Item field is unchanged.
