Specifying relationships between configuration items

To manage your configuration item collection, you can specify relationships between one configuration item and another configuration item.

Before you begin

You specify relationships in the Relationship application.

Procedure

  1. In the Configuration Items application, display the configuration item for which you want to specify a relationship.
This configuration item is the current configuration item.
  2. Click the Related CIs tab.
  3. Click New Row.
  4. Specify values for the source configuration item and the target configuration item.
The current configuration item can be either a source or target configuration item.
If you specify a configuration item that is not the current record in one of the fields, the other field displays the current configuration item.
  5. Specify a value for the relationship.
If both configuration items are associated with classifications, the relationship must be valid. If the relationship is not valid, you receive an error message.
  6. Use the Containment check box to determine if there is a containment relationship between the source and target configuration items.
The Containment check box is read only.
  7. Save your changes.

Example

You can specify that a particular software program is installed on a particular computer.
