Duplicating a baseline

You can create a new baseline from the members of an existing baseline, and then modify it for a new purpose.

Before you begin

Before you create a baseline, you should understand its purpose and the CIs that you want to include.

About this task

When you duplicate a baseline, the new baseline will have version 1 and will be inactive. You can add or remove members and make other changes before you activate the new baseline.

If you simply want to update an existing baseline, for example to reflect an authorized change to some of the members, you can create a new version of the existing baseline, and activate it to take a new benchmark of the member CIs in their updated state. Use duplication to create a new baseline, similar to the original, but differing in members and purpose.

In a multi-customer environment, the best practice is to create baselines all of whose members are associated with a single customer. If you have created a baseline that includes members that are associated with multiple customers, some member CIs might be excluded when you duplicate the baseline. Only those member CIs for which the person creating the new baseline has authorization will be included when a baseline is duplicated.

If you have created a multi-customer baseline, you can use the duplication process to separate the members into new single-customer baselines. For each customer whose CIs are included in the multi-customer baseline, have a user with authorization only for that customer create a duplicate. Each duplicate will include only those member CIs associated with that customer.

Procedure

  1. Click Open menu > IT Infrastructure > CI Baselines to open the CI Baselines application.
  2. Place the cursor in the CI Baseline field. Type a filter term if you want to limit the list of records. Press Enter.
  3. Open the baseline that you want to duplicate. The baseline can be active or inactive.
  4. In the baseline tab, click Select Action > New Baseline for Members.
  5. Give your new baseline a name and description. You will use this name to recognize and select the baseline from the record list and from any dialog boxes that list your baselines, so choose a name that describes the purpose or contents of the new baseline so that you can easily identify it.

What to do next

After you create the baseline, you can modify the list of members.
