IT assets overview

Use the Assets application to create and maintain asset records for IT assets and other assets that you want to track. The IT asset management features in Maximo IT support business processes such as technology refresh and end-of-life disposal for IT assets.

An asset record contains data that identifies and describes a specific serialized piece of equipment or material used in your enterprise. Assets can be either owned or leased by your company.

The Assets application includes information about the vendor, location, maintenance costs, parent asset, subassemblies, and other specifications. From the Assets application, you can view the asset hierarchy, including the parent and its child assets.

Most of the information that is specific to IT assets is displayed on the IT Details tab. This tab is conditional. It is displayed only when the asset that you select is classified as an IT asset. On this tab you can maintain data about how you disposed of IT assets at the end of their life cycle, manage technology refresh cycles, and view information about deployed assets that are associated with the IT assets.

What is the difference between an IT asset and other assets?

To distinguish IT assets from other types of assets, administrators define a top-level IT asset class in the Organizations application. Any asset that belongs to the hierarchy of the top-level IT class structure identifier is an IT asset. A top-level asset is an object that has no higher level parent object.

A top-level IT asset is generally an instance of a computer, network printer, or network device.

How are asset records created?

You can create asset records in the Assets application. You can also create asset records when you use the Receive Rotating Items action in the Receiving application to receive IT equipment or materials.

When you create an asset, it is not classified as an IT asset until you specify an IT asset classification in the Classification field on the Specifications tab. An asset will also be saved as an IT asset if you specify an item that has an IT asset classification in the Rotating Item field on the Asset tab. Note that selecting IT in the Type field does not classify the asset as an IT asset.
