Adding relationships to assets

You specify relationships between assets and locations to define a logical connection between separate assets. For example, you can define an intersection between a road and a railway line or a connection between a network cable and a computer.

Before you begin

Before you can add a relationship to an asset, you must first create the relationship definition in the Relationships application.

Procedure

  1. Select an asset and click the Relationships tab.
  2. In the Relationships table, click New Row.
  3. Optional: If you want to sort relationships sequentially, enter a sequence number for the relationship. Otherwise, relationships are shown in the order of entry.
  4. Specify a Relationship or use the Detail menu to select a value.
  5. In the Target Asset field, specify the asset that is the target in the relationship. If the Source Asset is not the currently selected asset, specify the current asset in the Target Asset field.
  6. Click New Row to add further relationships or Save.

What to do next

When you have entered the Source Asset, Relationship and Target Asset, the relationship is validated against any rules created in the Relationship application. If the relationship is not valid, an error message is shown. However, if the relationship definition has the Allow Over-Ride option selected, a message is shown, asking if the relationship should be applied regardless. You can override the validation warning by clicking OK.
