Licensing for IBM Maximo IT in Maximo Application Suite

IBM Maximo IT is delivered as part of IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) and follows the licensing model defined for the suite.

When deploying IBM Maximo IT, it is important to understand how licensing works within the Maximo Application Suite environment, particularly how AppPoints are used to enable user access.

This topic explains how IBM Maximo IT licensing works, how users consume AppPoints, and what to consider when integrating IBM Maximo IT with other systems.

Maximo IT and Maximo Application Suite

Maximo IT is licensed and deployed within Maximo Application Suite and uses the suite’s AppPoints licensing model.

This means that:

  1. Your organization must also have Maximo Application Suite entitlement. For more information on license types, see Licensing in Maximo Application Suite 9.1.
  2. Licensing is managed through AppPoints.
  3. Users across all Maximo Suite applications draw from the same AppPoints pool.

Maximo IT is a separate part purchase with Maximo Application Suite. Entitlement to the suite and Maximo IT is necessary.

The suite uses a shared licensing model, organizations can allocate AppPoints across different applications depending on their operational needs. Maximo IT must be licensed to allocate AppPoints to those users using Maximo IT capabilities.

The AppPoints model

Maximo Application Suite uses AppPoints to measure how users access applications. AppPoints represent the licensing capacity required for users to perform tasks in the system. Each user is assigned a user entitlement tier, which determines how many AppPoints are consumed. IBM Maximo IT parts, when purchased, which equate to AppPoints to the pool allow the IT licenses users to access Maximo IT.

Maximo IT licensing supports:
  • AppPoints allocation
  • All users of Maximo IT draw from the AppPoint pool
Typical user tiers include:
Table 1.
User tier Typical usage
Limited These are the users who have access to only 3 modules. If more are needed, they must become a base user.
Base Regular users who leverage a broad use of the application
Premium Users who require advanced functionality or cross-application capabilities, or have Service Provider installed

Higher tiers typically provide broader capabilities and therefore consume more AppPoints. This approach allows organizations to allocate licensing capacity based on how users interact with the system.

For example:
  1. A service desk analyst who manages incidents daily might require Limited if they use only 3 modules, if more, then a base user.
  2. A user who may work across many modules will be a Base or Premium user.

For IBM Maximo IT - AppPoints are utilized. They can be ‘Limited’, ‘Base’ or ‘Premium’ Tier level if Service Provider is installed.

How Maximo IT users consume AppPoints

Users who access Maximo IT consume AppPoints according to their assigned user entitlement. Common Maximo IT user roles, in the table below, are just an example and do not represent the complete list of roles or capabilities of Maximo IT, but may include:

Table 2.
Role example User type Typical activity
Service desk analyst Base Creating and managing incidents or service requests
IT support technician Base Updating tickets and resolving issues
Requester Limited Submitting service requests
Administrator Premium Managing configurations and workflows

Administrators should assign entitlement levels based on licensing and how each user interacts with the system. This helps ensure AppPoints are used efficiently while providing users with the access they require.

There are some non-charged entitlements for the Maximo IT application users that consume 0 AppPoints. To learn more about them, refer to the License Terms for Maximo IT.

Administrative users

Users who configure or administer Maximo IT also consume AppPoints. Administrative users might include:
  1. System administrators
  2. Configuration managers
  3. Platform administrators

Because these users perform configuration and management activities, their entitlement level is typically higher than that of occasional users. Organizations should ensure administrative users are assigned an appropriate entitlement level based on the Maximo Application Suite licensing model.

Licensing considerations for integrations

Maximo IT is often integrated with other enterprise systems, such as:
  1. IT monitoring platforms
  2. Security applications
  3. Identity and access management systems
  4. Discovery systems

When integrating external systems with Maximo IT, licensing considerations may apply depending on how those systems interact with Maximo data.

For example:
Table 3.
Integration scenario Licensing consideration
External system reads information from Maximo IT Licensing may not be required
External system creates service requests or updates records Licensing will be necessary

If an external system automatically creates or modifies records in Maximo IT, those actions may require appropriate licensing entitlements. Organizations should review their integration architecture to ensure that it aligns with the Maximo Application Suite licensing model.
