Tutorial: Getting started with hierarchies
Complete the tutorial to organize a set of devices into a hierarchy, import the hierarchy and assign devices. Then, you create calculations and dashboards for different levels of the hierarchy. After you create the hierarchy, you monitor the performance of your system from these dashboards.
Scenario
This tutorial is based on a fictional company that manages transportation networks for a number of clients. Client-ABC delivers a rail transportation network for the oil and gas industry.
Client-ABC divides its network into Southern Express, Western Express, Northern Express, and Eastern Express. Each region has multiple zones. Each zone has one more trains. Each train has an engine and compressor devices are assigned to each engine. A sensor on each compressor measures the speed and load of the compressor.
A remote operator at the company monitors the speed levels for trains. It's important that the compressor speed stays consistently over a value of 2.
- The operator monitors the minimum speed metric for each compressor and for each train.
- The manager of the train network is interested in the weekly minimum speed for the Southern Express network.
- Senior managers at are interested in the average speed of compressors at each level of the hierarchy.
High-level steps
In this tutorial, you will complete the following steps:
- Configure device types and add devices to Maximo Monitor.
- Organize your assets and locations into a hierarchy by using a .csv template file.
- Import the hierarchy into Maximo Monitor from the .csv file.
- Assign devices to train assets by using a .csv template file and import it. Alternatively, if you in Maximo Monitor 9.0, you can assign devices directly to a location or asset. On the Hierarchies tab, for an asset or location, click the three-dot menu and then click Assign devices. Select the devices to assign and then click Save.
- Create calculations for each hierarchy node.
- Configure dashboards for each hierarchy node.
- Monitor metrics for each level of the hierarchy from dashboards.
As you complete the tutorial, use the Importing hierarchies topic as a reference.
