Example: Specifying security access for technicians

When you apply a security group template to a Technician application users group, members of the group are authorized to access the Technican application.

Before you begin

Review information in the topic Authorizations for security groups that explains the security authorization levels more completely. It also provides information about more granular security permissions that you can configure.

About this task

Security groups for applications require authorizations to object structures and menu features that are used by the application. Complete these steps to authorize a new user for the Technician application. In this example, you create a new user and group to ensure that the security template is applied correctly to the Technician application.
Note: After you verify this process, you can repeat it and authorize existing users and groups for the application.

Procedure

  1. Create a new user.
  2. In the Security Groups application, create a new group and name it Technician_group.
  3. On the Sites tab, select Authorize Group for All Sites? to enable the group to access all sites, or specify individual sites.
  4. On the Applications tab, configure the Technician_group as the security group for the Technician application:
    1. In the Application Type column, filter for Tools and Tasks.
    2. Select the Technician record.
    3. Click Manage/Apply Template. In the Add/Modify Authorization Template window, click Apply Template to create a group based on the predefined authorization settings of the TECHMOBILE template.
    4. Optional: Click Add/Modify Signature Options to set signature options at the level of the application.
    5. Optional: Click Object Structure Authorizations to specify access to data at the level of the application.
    6. Click OK.
  5. On the Object Structures tab, specify access to data at the security group level:
    1. Select the MXAPIPERUSER object structure and grant access to Read and Save authorizations.
This authorization is required to authenticate to the user interface for the application.
    2. Optional: Grant access to any other object structures that you want members of the Technician_group security group to have access to.
This authorization is necessary if you want to enable access to data from external applications.
  6. Authorize the storerooms, labor, general ledger components and limits and tolerances for members of the security group.
  7. On the Data Restrictions tab, you can restrict access to objects, attributes, and collections.
  8. On the Users tab, add your new user you created to the Technician_group group.

Results

The user you created should now have access to the Technician application. You can verify access by logging in as the new user and opening the application.
