Classifying tools

You can classify tools to make it easier to distinguish a tool from similar tools. Attributes that you can use include size, speed, material, and capacity.

About this task

Classifying tools also helps you search for them quickly. If you do not remember a tool number, you can use a classifications search. While working with work orders, job plans, and on purchasing lines, you can use the Detail Menu in the Tool field to view classifications, attributes, and associated tools.

Procedure

  1. In the Tools application, open a tool record.
  2. Click the Specifications tab.
  3. In the Classifications field, click Detail Menu and then Classify to select a classification path for the tool.
  4. In the Alphanumeric field or Numeric field, specify a value for the tool.
  5. Specify a value for the measure unit used to express the attribute.
For example, if the attribute is SPEED, the unit of measure can be MPH, for miles per hour.
  6. Save your changes.

What to do next

If you need to change a tool's specification, reclassify the tool from the Classification field or change the values in the Specifications table.
