Running optimization

Using optimization templates, you can run optimization on your schedule scenarios and work lists to enhance scheduling results.

About this task

If you have a multilanguage environment, optimization results (messages, conflicts, and alerts) are returned in the language of the current user. For example, if a user in a Japanese environment runs optimization, the results are returned in Japanese. A user in an Italian environment who viewed the results would also see them in Japanese.

Procedure

  1. In the scheduling or assignment application, display the scenario or work list that you want to run optimization for.
  2. Optional: Review or create a new template.
    1. From the More Actions menu, select the optimization template that you want to run.
    2. In the template window, select an existing template or click New Template to create a new one.
    3. Review the parameters on the Template Main Parameters and Additional Parameters tabs. Include or exclude parameters that you want the optimization to consider by using the check boxes.
    4. Click OK to save your template and return to the schedule.
  3. From the Common Actions menu, select Run Optimization.
  4. Define the parameters for the optimization on the Variables tab and other tabs.
  5. Choose when you want the optimization to run.
    1. To run optimization immediately, click Run
    2. To set up optimization to run by using a cron task, click Set Cron Tasks. In the Optimization Parameters for Cron Tasks window, define when you want to the cron task to run. You can set it up to run at specific date and time, to run at a specific recurring interval, or both. Click Save to save your settings, then click Run.
  6. In the graphical view, review the results, and adjust the schedule or work list manually as necessary.

What to do next

You can monitor optimization processes and their progress by using the following optimization options in the More Actions menu:

  • View Optimization Processes
  • View Scheduled Optimization Processes
  • View Optimization Progress

For scheduling optimization, the View Optimization Progress window displays key performance indicator (KPI) information. Depending on the KPI value, you can terminate the optimization process by clicking Terminate.
