Example of comparing optimization scenarios

You can create multiple scenarios to perform an analysis of how resource allocation affects schedule dates. You can create the scenarios manually, or you can use predefined resource leveling options to automate the scheduling of work.

About this task

In this example, you have many work orders that must be completed with limited resources. You have an existing schedule that contains both current maintenance and emergent work and work from a substantial backlog. You must assign the work in order of priority to the resources that are available. You want to see whether allocating 100% of your resources to the schedule affects the dates significantly over allocating 75%.

1. With the schedule open, from the Actions menu, create a resource leveling scenario. Select OK and Move to open the new scenario.
2. From the Actions menu, click Run Optimization.
3. In the Resource Leveling Optimization window, select Immediate.
4. On the Variables tab, in the Percentage Availability field, enter 100. Click Submit.
5. In the Gantt view, review the results, and adjust the schedule manually as necessary.
6. Run the resource leveling scenario again by repeating steps 1-5. Use 75 in the Percentage Availability field.
7. Compare the scenarios.
8. Publish the scenario that best fits your needs.
