Rotating tools

A rotating tool is an individual serialized asset, such as a nail gun or back hoe, that is defined by a common tool number. You mark a tool as rotating because it shares the same properties as an asset and you want to track each instance of that tool as an asset to monitor maintenance costs, downtime, etc.

For example, you may have ten air compressors of the same model that share the same attributes, and they are all known by the common tool number Fermion-AC23. However, you want to be able to track each one as an individual asset, so you mark the tool as rotating.

After creating the tool and adding it to a storeroom, you can either use the Assets application to create the asset records for each individual tool you wish to track, or create a purchase order for the rotating tool and serialize it when you receive it. Once you have associated an asset to a rotating tool, the system can display and track balances for this tool. A rotating tool is tracked both by its tool number in Stocked Tool records and by its unique asset number in Assets records.
