Validating data

Before you import data, you create a validation session to check the integrity of the Construction-Operations Building information exchange (COBie) file and to validate that the COBie data matches with items in the Maximo® database, such as units of measure, attribute types, and classifications. You can view the validation messages on the Log Records tab.

About this task

The following items are verified when the integrity of the COBie file is validated:

Duplicate items

Each item on a sheet is checked for uniqueness based on the identifying fields for that sheet. If multiple files are provided for validation, then the same item in different files is not reported as a duplicate. Duplicate items in different files are merged.

Missing references
Every space is checked for a reference to a floor, and every component is checked for a reference to a space.
Missing row references
Attribute and documents tabs are checked for a value in the Row column.
Missing sheet references
Attribute and documents tabs are checked to ensure that a value exists in the Sheet column.
Mismatched values in a list
A message is reported when two attributes that have the same name have different lists of valid values.
Space lists
Component references are checked for more than one space. The COBie specification allows a component to have a comma-separated list of space references, but the import session supports only a single parent for a component. The first space in the list is used.
Uniqueness of asset IDs
If you choose to use the floor tab, room tag, or bar code for the asset ID, these fields are checked for uniqueness.
Unresolved references
Every COBie reference to another COBie item is checked to ensure that the referenced item exists.

The following items are verified against the Maximo database:

Categories
All categories that are listed in the input files are verified as valid classifications that have a Use With value for the object type.
Documents
The sizes and types of the listed documents are checked to ensure that they do not exceed limits in Maximo Manage. The documents are also checked to ensure that their names do not duplicate names of existing attachments.
ID fields
The length of the generated IDs in the COBie file is checked to ensure that they do not exceed the maximum length for the specified fields in the Maximo database.
Location values
If one of the options for user-specified or structured location values is selected, the values are checked to ensure that they do not exceed the maximum length of the location field.
Unit of measurement references
All units that are specified in the import file are verified as existing in the Maximo database.

Select Log All Messages to see which records match data in the Maximo database and which records are added to Maximo Manage.

Procedure

  1. In the BIM Projects application, open the project and in the Project Sessions section, add a row.
  2. Select Validate for the session type and click OK.
  3. Select or add the COBie file that you want to validate and review the settings on the tabs.
  4. To populate the system map on the Mappings tab with a list of all the systems that are defined in the COBie files, on the Options tab, select the Populate System Map option.
  5. Click Validate.
  6. View the results of the validation process on the Log Records tab.

What to do next

After the validation is run, resolve any validate issues and repeat the process until the log file is clean. You must create a new session to repeat the validation or to run an import.
