Linear asset classifications

When you classify a nonlinear asset, the attribute applies to the entire asset. When you classify a linear asset, you can enter different values for the same attribute and identify the start and end measures where the values for that attribute change.

For example, the material for a 100 foot pipe can be PVC from measure 0 to 50, and IRON from 50 to 100.

Ensure that you specify the Linear Type attribute as Linear to make it visible for a linear asset. This option exists to allow the same classification to be applied to linear and nonlinear assets.

If you want to ensure that you have a single value for an attribute for the entire span of the linear asset, identify it as Continuous. Running the Gaps and Overlap report identifies any continuous attributes or features that have overlapping values, or any spans that are without a value. An example of a continuous attribute is a speed limit for a road, since the entire road has a speed limit, yet only a single speed limit for any span.
