Features application
A feature is a physical object, such as a guard rail or a mile marker, that you associate with one or more linear assets. Features are not tracked with unique identifiers. You apply costs associated with a feature to the linear asset that has a unique identifier.
A road is a linear asset. The features of a road include guard rails, mile posts, signs, traffic lights, pavement, culverts, intersections, and so on. Features that are associated with assets are unique, based on their start and end measures, and can also have labels. Typically a label is used only when that label can be reference in the field. For example guardrails typically don't have labels, but mile posts, such as MP 27, have labels. In some cases, such as railways, the same label can exist more than once for a single linear asset, for example if a segment of track was acquired from another organization. This arrangement is acceptable, and the two labeled features are identified using both their labels as well as their start and end measures.
You use the Features application to create, to modify, and to delete the features used with linear assets. Use the Assets application to associate features with linear assets, and to specify a classification for the feature. You cannot delete a feature after it has been associated with a linear asset.
