Meters

You can create meters and associate meters with items. The associated asset or location record is updated with the quantity that was issued and decreases the storeroom balance of that item.

When you associate a meter with an item and issue the item to a work order, to an asset, or to a location, the associated asset or location record is updated with the quantity that was issued and decreases the storeroom balance of that item. This occurs only when the meter on the item matches the meter on the asset or on the location.

Meters can be of the following types:

  • Continuous, such as gallons to date or running time meters.
  • Gauge, such as temperature readings.
  • Characteristic, such as a color or a vibration level.

Example of a continuous meter

You can track fuel consumption for an asset. Define FUEL as a meter and GASOLINE as an item. Use the Item Master application to associate the meter FUEL with the item GASOLINE. When you issue fuel for an asset, such as for a truck, the balance of the fuel in the storeroom is decreased by the amount issued. Use the Meters tab in the Assets application to see that the amount of fuel issued to the truck increases by the amount specified.
