Understanding Revisions for Administrators
Metadata administrators can choose between multiple types of scan types (scan is described in How Do Scanners Work?). Each scan type has significant implications on the resulting lineage. See Understanding Revisions first to find out what revisions are, learn about different types of revisions, and understand how end-users see and use revisions.
IBM Automatic Data Lineage offers and recommends using one unified scan type called Targeted scan. Check Targeted scanning to learn how Targeted scans work and how to use them.
From version R42.5, the Targeted scans are enabled by default for new installations. Legacy scans are deprecated. Once targeted scanning is enabled, option to choose from major and minor revisions is no longer available.
Legacy scanning can be used (and remains the default for upgrade from previous versions of Manta). It is documented in Legacy scanning.
Comparison
The table presents the comparison of all available scan types:
Targeted scan | Legacy scan using minor revisions | Legacy scan using major revisions |
---|---|---|
Scans only selected connections | Scans only selected connections | Scans all connections (takes a long time to rescan) |
Starts with data from the last revision | Starts with data from the last revision | Starts with an empty revision |
Deletes deprecated objects | Does not delete deprecated objects | Deletes deprecated objects |
Targeted scans combine the advantages of both previous scan types.
