Explanation of Power BI Scanner Log Errors

We have found some errors in log files when analyzing Power BI reports with IBM Automatic Data Lineage. Could you provide detailed information as to what these errors mean?

Solution

The table below describes the error messages you can find in Automatic Data Lineage connector log files (e.g., powerBIDataflowMasterScenario_MyConnection.properties.log, etc.).

Extractor errors start generally with the message:

REPORT_NOT_DOWNLOADABLE User message: <reportname> is accessible by the provided user, but it's not downloadable. This happens most likely either because the provided user doesn't have edit access to the report or because the report itself isn't downloadable.
java.net.ConnectException: Request to https://api.powerbi.com/v1.0/myorg/groups/.../reports/.../Export failed.

Not all reports can be exported. For example, they may be created directly in the browser (rather than published from Power BI Desktop), or the export may be disabled by your administrator. When you open the report in the browser, can you export it from File → Download Report or it is disabled? Here is the full list of requirements for a report to be exportable.

  • To download the file, you must have edit access to the report.
  • The report must have been created using Power BI Desktop and been published to the Power BI service, or the .pbix must have been uploaded to the service.
  • The report must be published or updated after November 23, 2016. Reports published prior to then are not downloadable.
  • This feature will not work with reports originally created in the Power BI service, including content packs.
  • You should always use the latest version of Power BI Desktop when opening downloaded files. Downloaded .pbix files may not open in non-current versions of Power BI Desktop.
  • If your administrator has turned off the ability to export data, this feature will not be visible in the Power BI service.
 The report will not be downloaded and analyzed for lineage.

The report/dataset was not created in Power BI Desktop and cannot be backed up; for example, internal Power BI Usage Metrics Reports, datasets created by Power BI Goals, reports created in the browser, etc.

Refreshing the reports should help. This also applies to any case where the report/dataset was not created in Power BI

The user who did the configuration does not have sufficient permissions for this workspace. Contributor, Member, or Admin permissions are required for the workspace.

The report/dataset cannot be found. The report may have been deleted, or the user does not have sufficient permissions for the workspace. Contributor, Member, or Admin permissions are required for the workspace. Apply this to the service principal or security group.

Datasets with incremental refresh cannot be downloaded to a .pbix file.

This can be fixed by manually refreshing that dataset in the Power BI app or by republishing any report with that dataset.

The best way to maintain the information used to generate lineage is to refresh the report datasets. The official guide https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/refresh-scheduled-refresh describes how to establish manual and scheduled refreshes to ensure your reports are up to date and the lineage available will reflect the latest deployments.

Lineage for the report will be missing.
