A model defines the allowable configuration of an asset. You create models in the Models (CM) application.

Defining engineering reference data for assets
When you receive an asset, such as an aircraft or a train, you must create engineering reference data for it. The engineering reference data specifies the configurations that are allowed for the asset and how it is maintained. During day-to-day operations, the build data interpreter (BDI) uses the engineering reference data to ensure that any changes to the asset are valid.

Configuring CM items
A configuration-managed (CM) item is a part number that is under configuration-management control. A default CM item is created when you define a model. You configure CM items and create new ones in the CM Item Master (CM) application.
