Configuring a Zebra Printer policy in the IBM MaaS360 Portal

Configure the default Zebra printer policy in the IBM® MaaS360® Portal to manage Zebra printers on the corporate network.

Before you begin

The administrator must enable the Zebra Printer Management service in the IBM Admin Portal.
  • Select Setup > Services and enable Zebra Printer Management.
    Note: If the service is not available in the IBM Admin Portal, contact IBM Support to enable this setting for your account.

Procedure

  1. From the IBM MaaS360 Portal home page, select Security > Policies > Zebra Printer Policy.
    The Zebra Printer Policy is displayed.
    Note: For the IBM MaaS360 platform 10.70 release, use the Zebra Printer Policy as a template for custom Zebra printer policies.
  2. Click View to display the Zebra printer default policy configuration settings.
  3. Click Base Settings, and then configure the following attribute settings for a Zebra printer.
    Base setting Description
    Printer Darkness The darkness setting used by the Zebra printer for a print. The values are from 0 (lightest shade) to 30 (darkest shade).
    Print Method The method used by a Zebra printer to print on paper. The values are as follows.
    • thermal trans or thermal transfer (default)
      The Zebra printer uses a ribbon to print on thermal transfer paper.
    • direct thermal
      The Zebra printer prints on a heat-sensitive page (no ribbon is used).
    Print Mode The action a Zebra printer takes on a printed label or a group of printed labels.
    Note: Some actions might not apply to all Zebra printer models.
    The values are as follows.
    • tear off: The position of the label over the tear-off/peel-off bar after printing. The label and backing are torn off or cut between labels.
    • peel off: The position of the label over the tear-off/peel-off bar after printing. The label and backing are torn off or cut between labels.
    • rewind: The label and backing material are wound onto a spindle within the print engine and then dispensed for use in a separate process.
    • applicator: The application in the Zebra printer that delivers a label.
    • cutter: The cut mode used by a Zebra printer after each label is printed.
    • delayed cut: The cut mode used by a Zebra printer to print a label at a set time.
    • linerless peel: The position of the sticky tape label over the tear-off/peel-off bar after printing. The label and backing are torn off or cut between labels.
    • linerless rewind: The sticky tape label and backing material are wound onto a spindle within the print engine and then dispensed for use in a separate process.
    • linerless tear: The position of the sticky tape label over the tear-off/peel-off bar after printing. The label and backing are torn off or cut between labels.
    Print Media Type The print media type used by the Zebra printer. The values are as follows.
    • continuous: A continuous form of media is used by the Zebra printer (no gaps, notches, black marks for top of form detection). (Default value)
    • auto_detect
    Reprint Mode The Zebra printer reprints previous prints. The values are on or off (default).
    Media Action When Power® Up The action taken on the print media type when the Zebra printer is turned on. The values are as follows.
    • calibrate: The media and ribbon sensors are recalibrated. (Default value)
    • feed: The label is fed to the first web.
    • length: The length of the label.
    • no motion: The media does not move.
    • short cal: If the media is too short, the label continues on the next label.
    Media Speed The time (in inches per second) it takes a Zebra printer to print. The values are from 2 (default) to 12 ips (inches per second).
    Display Language The language is displayed on the front pane of the Zebra printer. The values are as follows.
    • English (default)
    • Spanish
    • French
    • German
    • Italian
    • Norwegian
    • Portuguese
    • Swedish
    • Danish
    • Ppanish2 (same as Spanish)
    • Dutch
    • Finnish
    • Japanese
    • Korean
    • Simp Chinese
    • Trad Chinese

    Media Action after Printhead is Closed The action taken on the print media when a printhead is closed and a printer is brought back online. The values are as follows.
    • feed: The print engine feeds the labels to the next web.
    • calibrate: The print engine feeds the labels and recalibrates the media sensors. (default)
    • length: The length of the label.
    • no motion: The media does not move.
    • short cal: If the media is too short, the label continues on the next label.
    Device Location The location of the Zebra printer that is displayed on the
    server/sysinfo.htm page. The values are any ASCII string up to 128 characters. The default value is "" (empty string).
  4. Click Label Settings, and configure the following attribute settings for a Zebra printer label.
    Label setting Description
    Label Length The length of a label used on a Zebra printer.

    The values are 1 - 32000 (in dot rows) not to exceed the maximum label length. A Zebra printer can accept any value for this parameter. However, the amount of memory that is installed on the printer determines the maximum length of the label.

    Label Width The width of a label printed by the Zebra printer.

    The values are any printhead width.

    Tear Off Position The position of the label over the tear-off/peel-off bar after printing. The label and backing are torn off or cut between labels. Values: -120 to 120 in dot rows

    The default value is 0.

    Label's Left Margin Offset The position of the left edge of the label (in dot rows). Values: -9999 to 9999

    The default value is 0.

  5. Click Alert Settings, select the Configure Alerts checkbox, and configure alerts for each Zebra printer in the policy.
    Alert setting Description
    SMTP Server Address Each Zebra printer communicates with this SMTP server to provide alerts for specific error conditions such as Paper Out or Printer Paused.
    Alert Condition Administrators are alerted by email message if a specific Zebra printer experiences any of the following issues.
    • Battery Low
    • Clean Printhead
    • Cold Start
    • Cutter Jam
    • Head Cold
    • Head Element Bad
    • Head Open
    • Head Too Hot
    • Label Ready
    • Media Low
    • Paper Out
    • Power On
    • Printer Paused
    • PQ Job Completed
    • Rewind
    • Replace Head
    • RFID Error
    • Ribbon In
    • Ribbon Low
    • Ribbon Out
    • Supply Too Hot
    Email Notification email messages that are sent to specific administrators when an alert or a printer issue that is resolved can be cleared from the alert queue.
    Tip: To manage the number of incoming email messages that are triggered by alerts, create an email group (for example, called Zebra Alert Group) that uses a single email address to receive all alerts.

    Click the https:// link to access a web-based interface that is provided by Zebra that helps you to manage the printer.

  6. Click Save and Publish.

Results

The updated policy is stored in the Zebra printer database on the local server where the Cloud Extender® is installed. The updated policy settings are then sent and applied to all Zebra printers on the designated subnet.
