Activating license management

IBM® MaaS360® provisions self-serviceable activation of license management. Using this feature, portal administrators can activate license management for their IBM MaaS360 accounts.

Notes:
  • The self-serviceable interface to activate license management is not generally available. Contact IBM Support to check for your eligibility for this feature and get it enabled for your account. Once enabled, portal administrators must ensure to activate license management for their MaaS360 accounts within 90 days from the date of enablement, else an auto-activation is triggered and the license management is automatically activated for the account. For information on the criteria based on which licenses are assigned to devices during auto-activation, see License management FAQs.
  • License management is automatically activated for a few MaaS360 accounts based on their eligibility. If license management is activated for your account, the License Management workflow at Setup > License Management > License Overview is visible to the administrator.
  • To activate license management for business partner accounts, you must contact IBM Support.
  • After license management is activated for a MaaS360 account, all the devices in that account are migrated to license management, and all the license management features will become available for portal administrators and business partners.

Activating license management for new customer accounts

License management is activated by default for trial and new customer accounts that are created from the IBM Marketplace or a third-party marketplace.

Note: If you upgrade from a trial customer account to a paid customer account, only the services in the purchased license entitlements are available for you to use on devices.

For example, if you enable MaaS360 email in the trial customer account and you purchase an Essentials Suite license when you upgrade to a paid customer account, only the services that are included in the Essentials Suite license work on devices. Any device that used MaaS360 email during the trial period can no longer use MaaS360 email, although the policy is configured on the device.

Activating license management for existing customer accounts

MaaS360 provisions self-serviceable activation of license management for existing customer accounts. Using this feature, portal administrators can activate license management for their MaaS360 accounts.

Activation of license management involves various intermediate stages. Sequentially, progress from one section to another section by reviewing the data, configuring the data, and then confirming the details in each section.

Follow the steps to activate license management.

  1. Log in to the IBM MaaS360 Portal as a portal administrator.
  2. From the IBM MaaS360 Portal Home page, select Setup > Activate license management.

The Activate license management page includes the following sections that you must sequentially progress from one section to another section in the following order:

    Section Description
Recommended assignments Review the recommended licenses and modify the recommendations if required.
Excess services Review and accept the excess services that are used by the devices.
Manual assignments Manually assign licenses to devices for which a license recommendation is not generated.
Auto-assignments Configure default base and add-on licenses that you want to automatically assign to devices that are enrolled in MaaS360 through self-enrollment or self-activation methods.
Excess services

The Excess services section displays any excess services that are consumed by devices that are outside the purchased license suites. Review and accept the excess services that are used by the devices.

Note:
  • All devices that use excess services will lose their entitlements 90 days after license management is activated for an account. Purchase licenses for the excess services to continue to use these services within those 90 days.
  • Any new devices that are enrolled or activated after activation of license management wont receive excess services.

Review the Excess services section and click Next to confirm and then proceed to the next (Manual assignments) section.

Result

  • License management is activated for the IBM MaaS360 account, and a request is submitted to migrate the devices. After migration is completed, MaaS360 sends a process completion email to the primary administrator who submitted the request. This email includes an attachment with details of the license assignment status: success or failure. After license management is activated, you must log off and then log in again to the IBM MaaS360 Portal and you can view the license consumption details on the Setup > License Management > License Overview page.
  • The excess services that are used by the devices are disabled on the Setup > Services page. The disabled services can only be enabled if those services are purchased. For more information, see Excess services in the MaaS360 Portal.
  • After license management is activated for an account, all the license management features will become available. For more information, see Using the license management feature.
  • If the license management activation fails due to a technical issue, IBM MaaS360 sends a process failure email to the primary administrator who submitted the request.
  • After license management is activated, customers who want to trial out features of MaaS360 outside their subscriptions must contact MaaS360 Support or visit https://ibm.biz/maas360csm to connect with the CSM team. For more information, see How to trial out new features of MaaS360 after License Management is activated? FAQ in License management FAQs.
Notes:
  • New devices that are enrolled in IBM MaaS360 after license management is activated for an account are directly assigned licenses.
  • After license management is activated for an account, the enrollment limit setting for devices and users at Setup > Settings > Directory and Enrollment > Basic Enrollment Settings: By Account is disabled and not visible to the portal administrator or the partner managing as a customer. The Overage settings configured for the account overrides the enrollment limit setting.
