Kiosk Mode Restrictions

The Kiosk Mode Restrictions settings disable features and Launcher settings on an Android device in kiosk mode.

Restriction settings

The following table describes the settings you can manage on an Android device in kiosk mode:
Policy setting Description Supported devices
Kiosk mode type The kiosk mode that is applied on a device:
  • Show custom home page with allowed apps - App IDs for allowed apps in kiosk mode: The app IDs that are allowed on a device in kiosk mode. Use the folder name followed by the app ID: folder_name/app_id

    The order that you use to add allowed apps for the device is maintained on the device in kiosk mode.

  • Automatically launch a required app and lock the device to display only this - App ID of the app to be automatically launched: The app ID of an app that can be automatically started from a device in kiosk mode.
All Android and SAFE devices
Block multi-window mode Multiple window browsers are blocked on the device. If you enable this setting in the policy, the Task Manager and any recent apps are disabled on the device.

This setting does not support the flash bar (with a hold of the Back button) to start apps with multiple window browsers.

SAFE 4.0+
Block Task Manager The Task Manager is blocked on a device in kiosk mode.

For non-SAFE devices, blocking the Task Manager also disables the system bar.

All Android and SAFE devices
Hide navigation bar The navigation bar is disabled on a device in kiosk mode.

This setting applies only to tablets.

SAFE 4.0+
Hide status bar The status bar, which includes network, time, battery, notifications, and other notifications, is disabled on a device in kiosk mode. SAFE 4.0+
Allow status bar expansion The status bar can be expanded and display notifications.
If you disable this setting in the policy, the following results occur:
  • the Recent Applications pane cannot be expanded on tablets
  • notifications are still available and display on the status bar
SAFE 3.0+
Hide system bar The system bar is hidden on a device in kiosk mode.

If you disable this setting in the policy, both the navigation bar and the status bar are disabled on tablets.

SAFE 3.0+
Enable widgets The user can configure widgets on a device in kiosk mode. Android 4.1+
Bluetooth settings Bluetooth settings can be configured on the Launcher for Android 5.75+ devices in kiosk mode.

This setting applies only to the Automatically launch a required app and lock the device to display only this kiosk mode type.

Android 4.4+
Wi-Fi settings Wifi settings can be configured on the Launcher for Android 5.75+ devices in kiosk mode.

This setting applies only to the Automatically launch a required app and lock the device to display only this kiosk mode type.

Android 4.4+
Auto upgrade kiosk An Android 5.75+ device that is in kiosk mode can be automatically upgraded to the latest kiosk. Android 4.4+
Block hardware keys The user cannot use hardware keys on a device in kiosk mode. The following site provides a list of the supported keys for a device in kiosk mode: https://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/KeyEvent.html

For SAFE 3.0+ devices, you can block all the hardware keys on a device. For other manufacturers of Android devices, you can block only the power key.

All Android and SAFE devices
Enable admin bypass for kiosk mode The user can use a passcode that was set up by the administrator to temporarily bypass kiosk mode on the device. The following settings can be configured for bypass mode:
  • Admin-Defined passcode: The passcode contains a minimum of 4 characters, and supports only letters and numbers.
  • Enable dynamic passcode generation: The passcode is dynamically generated for each bypass action.
Android 5.65+

Launcher settings

The following table describes the Launcher settings that you can disable on an Android device in kiosk mode:

Disable auto rotate The user cannot automatically rotate the device screen in kiosk mode.

If you enable this setting in the policy, the device view changes when the user rotates the device.

All Android and SAFE devices
Screen orientation in Portrait Mode The user can launch a kiosk mode device in Portrait Mode. All Android and SAFE devices
App icon size The size of the app icon that is displayed for the Launcher. All Android and SAFE devices
App name font size The font size that is used to display the app name on a device in kiosk mode. All Android and SAFE devices
Allow users to rearrange icons The user can rearrange icons on a device in kiosk mode. All Android and SAFE devices
Allow users to change wallpaper The user can change the wallpaper on a device in kiosk mode.

Additional wallpaper options: The selected wallpaper to use on the device. This setting is only supported for Android MDM App 5.35+.

All Android and SAFE devices
Logo position The position of the logo that is displayed on a device in kiosk mode. All Android and SAFE devices
System apps/settings to be allowed The following apps and settings are allowed from the Launcher on an Android 5.75+ device in kiosk mode:
  • Chrome
  • Camera
  • Calendar
  • Contacts
  • Settings
  • Gmail
  • Dialer
  • Gallery
  • Wifi settings
  • Bluetooth settings
