Passcode

The Passcode settings enforce the use of a secure passcode to unlock an Android device.

Note: The Passcode policy is supported on Android 2.2+ devices only.

The following table describes the passcode settings that you can configure on an Android device:
Policy setting Description Supported devices
Passcode quality The type of passcode that users create. Users can create a matching or a strong passcode.

For example, if Pattern is selected, users can create a passcode that uses numbers in a complex pattern.

Android 2.2+
Minimum passcode length (4 - 16 characters) The minimum number of characters that are needed for a passcode. The range is 4 - 16 characters. Android 2.2+
Allow fingerprint The Android device can be unlocked with a fingerprint. SAFE 5.1+
Maximum passcode age (in days) The number of days that can pass before a passcode must be changed. The range is 1 - 730 days.

If you leave this field blank, the passcode never expires.

Android 3.0+
Allowed idle time (in minutes) before auto-lock The amount of time the device remains inactive before the device is locked automatically. Android 2.2+
Delay for passcode prompt after lock screen The amount of time that passes before a passcode prompt appears on the screen of a locked Android device. SAFE 2.0+
Passcode history The number of times a unique passcode is used before a older passcode can be used again.

If you leave this field blank, you can reuse a passcode that you previously used on the device.

Android 3.0+
Maximum failed password attempts (for Lock or Wipe depending on policy) The number of password attempts that are allowed before the device is wiped or locked.

The following actions are taken by SAFE and Android devices when the user exceeds the maximum number of password attempts:

  • Wipe: If the Lock device on failed passcode attempts setting is not selected, data on a SAFE device and other Android devices is wiped from the device.
  • Lock: If the Lock device on failed passcode attempts setting is selected, SAFE devices are locked, instead of wiped. For some Android devices, the action to lock the device is not available.

If you leave this field blank, the device remains unlocked and data is not wiped from the device.

Android 2.2+
Lock device on failed passcode attempts The device is locked when the user exceeds the maximum number of attempts to enter the passcode.

This policy setting is defined in the Number of failed passcode attempts setting.
