Hardware equipment and software environment for the z/VM virtualization tests
To perform our z/VM virtualization performance tests, we needed to create a customer-like environment. We configured the hardware and software for both the client and the server and we configured the Trade workload software.
Server hardware

- One LPAR on a 16-way IBM® System z9® Enterprise Class (EC), Model 2094-S18,
equipped with:
- 8 physical CPUs, dedicated
- 20 GB central memory
- 2 GB expanded memory
- OSA Express 2 Ethernet card
- 2 FICON® Express Channels
- 5 FCP Channels 2 Gb/sec
- 1 CEX2C Crypto card
- Network setup

- Web Servers and client workstations on a 1 Gb Ethernet LAN
- All Linux® guests also used a z/VM® HiperSockets guest LAN, 24 K frame size

storage DS8000®,
Disk Drive Modules = 73 GB each/15000 RPMs
For the operating system and applications on 15 Linux guest systems:
- 30 ECKD mod9 spread over one rank/LCU
- 2 FICON paths
- 5 SCSI disks over 5 FCP channels/ranks. 1 channel per database system. 10 GB each from the same DS8000 as the ECKD disks.

- 1 x 2.4 GHz H20 Intel Blade with 4 GB RAM (works as the Trade workload generator)
- IBM eServer™ xSeries model x335, 2x2.8 GHz, Intel Xeon 2 GB, 72 GB (works as a Trade controller and to gather the Trade statistics from the workload generators)
