Initiating a list-directed dump

To initiate the dump, IPL the list-directed dump tool using the list-directed load type.

Before you begin

You need to know the device number of the device where you installed the dump tool, see Installing the dump tool for list-directed dump.

About this task

The dump process can take several minutes depending on the device type you are using and the amount of system memory. The dump progress and any error messages are reported on the operating system messages console.

List-directed dumping is limited to one concurrent dump per CEC, that is, if another LPAR is being dumped at the same time, the dump process will fail.

Results

The dump process copies the dump to the dump partition. When the dump completes successfully, you can IPL Linux® again. You can then extract the dump from the dump partition into a file.
