Organizational business units

9.2.2 Available from 9.2.2.

To view license metric utilization per business unit, you can use one of two approaches depending on your scenario.

  • If component instances of a product that are used by each unit are installed on separate computers, divide the computers into groups and generate reports of license metric utilization per computer group.
  • If component instances of a product that are used by multiple units are installed on a single computer, create a dedicated product for each unit. Then, assign component instances that are used by a particular unit to their dedicated product.
Both approaches are optional. If you are interested in metric utilization within the entire company rather than within each business unit separately, no additional steps are required.

Dividing computers into groups

If component instances of a product that are used by each unit are installed on separate computers, perform the following steps.
  1. Divide the computers in your infrastructure into groups that reflect business units. Ensure that each group contains only computers from one unit. Do not create computer groups that overlap as it might distort the obtained results.
  2. If software in each unit is managed by a different person, create dedicated License Metric Tool users, each with access to computers in one unit.
  3. Import part numbers for each computer group and classify software within each unit.
For detailed instructions, see: Tutorial: Reporting metric utilization per computer group.

Example

A company has three business units: Finance, HR, and IT. Because employees in each unit use software that is typical for their position, the Software Asset Manager wants to manage the software for each unit separately. To do this, he asked the IT Architect to create three computer groups in License Metric Tool, each containing computers from only one business unit. The computer group hierarchy looks as follows.
  • All Computers
    • Computer Group 1: Finance
    • Computer Group 2: HR
    • Computer Group 3: IT
The Software Asset Manager can now import part numbers that are dedicated for each computer group and manage software within each unit separately. He can also generate separate reports of license metric utilization within each unit. However, to create the audit snapshot of subcapacity utilization within the entire company, he must generate the audit snapshot for the All Computers group.

9.2.29 Creating products dedicated to business units

If products that are used by different business units are installed on a single computer require independent license usage reporting, perform the following steps.
  1. Create a dedicated product for each unit that uses it. In the name of the dedicated product, indicate which business unit uses it.
  2. Assign component instances that are used by a particular unit to their dedicated product.
For detailed instructions, see: Tutorial: Reporting software that is installed on a single computer under multiple tenants.

Example

A company has three business units: Finance, HR, and IT. IBM DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition PVU Option is a component of the product with the same name. Three instances of the component are installed on the same computer. Each instance is used by a different unit. To monitor utilization of the license metric for the product: IBM DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition PVU Option within each unit, the Software Asset Manager creates three products:
  • IBM DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition PVU Option for Finance
  • IBM DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition PVU Option for HR
  • IBM DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition PVU Option for IT
The Software Asset Manager assigns instances of the component: IBM DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition PVU Option that are used by the Finance department to the dedicated product: IBM DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition PVU Option for Finance. Then, he repeats the step for the component instances that are used by the HR and IT departments. He can now view utilization of the license metric for the DB2 product per each business unit.
