License Metric Tool Lite infrastructure

The deployment of License Metric Tool consists of the License Metric Tool server, its database , and the disconnected data source. Apart from that, disconnected scanner must be installed on every monitored computer.

Important: License Metric Tool Lite is pre-approved for subcapacity reporting in environments with up to 500 computers. To use this approach for subcapacity reporting in larger environments, you need to obtain the approval of IBM Compliance. To request for the approval, write an e-mail to talk2sam@us.ibm.com.

The limit applies to computers where the disconnected scanner is installed. If you have a mixed environment in which both disconnected computers and computers with the BigFix® client exist, the total number of computers can be higher.

License Metric Tool components

The License Metric Tool infrastructure consists of the following components.
License Metric Tool server
The License Metric Tool server provides a reporting interface for the inventory data that is collected from the computers in your infrastructure. To process the data in real time and to ensure reporting accuracy, the License Metric Tool server should run all the time. Users access the application server through a web user interface. The web user interface is accessible at https://host_name:port, where host_name is the host name of the computer where the License Metric Tool server is installed, and port is the port that you specified during the installation, by default: 9081.

Database
Database for the License Metric Tool server, either DB2 for the server on Linux or MS SQL Server for the server on Windows.
VM Manager Tool

To collect data from VM managers, License Metric Tool uses the VM Manager Tool. The tool connects to VM managers and gathers data about their capacity, focusing on processors, their type, and usage. The data is then imported to License Metric Tool and utilization of license metrics is calculated. For more information, see: VM Manager Tool.

Disconnected data source

Disconnected scanner
Disconnected scanner is an independent component that is used by License Metric Tool to collect information about the hardware, as well as the software that is installed on the computers in your infrastructure.

Additional components

Apart from components of License Metric Tool, you also need to implement a task automation platform of your choice or reuse the one that already exists in your infrastructure to transfer scan results to the disconnected data source.
