Scanning symbolic links and junctions (BigFix® scenario)

Windows 9.2.29 Available from 9.2.29.

By default, symbolic links and junctions (reparse points) are not scanned. To discover software that is installed in such locations, enable their scanning.

About this task

  • When you enable scanning of symbolic links and junctions, both local and remote drives are scanned. It might significantly increase duration of the software scan.
  • The scan does not detect infinite loops. As a results, the scan might last forever and fill up system resources. Ensure that there are no infinite loops.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the computer on which you want to enable scanning of symbolic links.
  2. Open the command line as Administrator, and run the following command.
    "<scanner_directory>\cit\bin\wscancfg" -s fscanner.scanReparsePoints true
Where <scanner_directory> is the scanner installation directory. By default, it is C:\Program Files\Tivoli.
  3. To verify that scanning of reparse points was enabled, run the following command.
    "<scanner_directory>\cit\bin\wscancfg" -g fscanner.scanReparsePoints
If the output of the command is key fscanner.scanReparsePoints=true, scanning was enabled.
  4. Wait for the scheduled software scan or start it manually by using the Initiate Software Scan fixlet.

Results

Results of the next software scan that are imported to License Metric Tool contain information about software that is installed under symbolic links or junctions.
